What viscosupplementation is

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in healthy joint fluid, where it contributes to lubrication and cushioning. In osteoarthritis, that fluid changes. Viscosupplementation — commonly called a “gel” injection — introduces hyaluronic acid into the joint space.

It is a different tool from a corticosteroid injection. Steroid targets inflammation and often works quickly; hyaluronic acid tends to take longer to build its effect but can last up to approximately six months. Many patients who have plateaued on steroid injections move to this next.

Every gel injection we give is placed under live ultrasound guidance, which matters here: the injectate needs to reach the joint space to do anything at all.

What the visit involves

Depending on the specific product, viscosupplementation is given as a single injection or as a short series of weekly injections. Because we come to you, a three-injection series does not mean three trips to a clinic — it means three short visits at your kitchen table, at times that suit you, seven days a week.

• Examination and ultrasound assessment of the joint.
• Aspiration of excess joint fluid first, if that is clinically appropriate.
• Ultrasound-guided injection into the joint space.
• Written aftercare and a scheduled next visit if a series is planned.

Afterwards

Expect the joint to feel full or mildly sore for a day or two. Most patients are asked to take it easy on the joint that day and then return to normal activity. Relief typically builds over a few weeks rather than arriving overnight.

Coverage

Hyaluronic acid injections are billed to Medicare Part B and to the Medicare Advantage plans we are credentialed with — UnitedHealthcare, Network Health and Humana. Coverage rules for viscosupplementation vary by plan and by joint, so we verify your specific benefits on the free screening call.
