What to expect

What an orthopaedic house call is actually like

Written for anyone weighing this up for themselves — or for a parent, from two hours away. Here is exactly what happens, in order.

Step one: the free telephone screening

Nothing is scheduled until we have talked. Call (920) 777-9876 and we will ask about the joint that hurts, how long it has been going on, what has already been tried (physical therapy, over-the-counter medication, previous injections), your other medical conditions and medications, whether you use a walker or wheelchair, and your insurance.

Adult children call on a parent's behalf all the time. That is completely normal, and with your parent's permission we are glad to talk through options with you.

The screening call costs nothing and carries no obligation. Sometimes it ends with us telling you that what you need is a surgeon, an MRI or your primary care provider instead. That is a good outcome too.

Step two: the visit

What Eric brings

  • A portable diagnostic ultrasound unit for live image guidance.
  • Everything needed for a sterile field — drape, gloves, skin preparation, dressings.
  • The medications or the iovera° system relevant to your agreed plan.
  • His own hand-hygiene supplies and sharps disposal, which leave with him.

What you need to have ready

  • A sturdy chair — a dining chair or recliner is ideal.
  • A clear tabletop or counter roughly the size of a place setting, for the sterile field.
  • Good light and a nearby outlet.
  • Loose clothing or shorts, so the joint can be reached and examined.
  • Your medication list and insurance card, if you have not already given them over the phone.

You do not need a treatment table, a spare room, a caregiver present or a cleaned house. We have treated patients in kitchens, sunrooms, apartment living rooms and facility common areas.

How long it takes

First visit, single joint
Typically about 45 to 60 minutes door to door, including the examination, consent, treatment and aftercare instructions.
Follow-up or repeat injection
Usually shorter — often 20 to 30 minutes.
iovera° treatment
The treatment itself is a matter of minutes per nerve target; the visit around it is what takes the time.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe the injections as brief pressure and a sting, comparable to an injection in a clinic. Ultrasound guidance often means fewer attempts, because the needle is being watched rather than estimated. For iovera°, the skin is numbed first and the cold itself is generally well tolerated. You will be told what is happening before each step, and you can stop at any point.

Step three: afterwards

You will get written aftercare instructions before Eric leaves, along with a phone number to call if something does not feel right. Most patients are up and walking around the house immediately; specific activity guidance depends on the joint and the treatment.

We will agree on a follow-up plan on the spot — a check-in call, a repeat injection at the appropriate interval, or treatment of a second joint at a later visit. If you want your primary care provider or surgeon to have the note, we send it.

No clinic or hospital visit is required

From the first call to the last follow-up, this pathway does not require you to travel, to arrange a ride, to sit in a waiting room or to pay for parking. If you ever need something we cannot deliver at home, we will say so directly.

For families arranging care from out of town

Call us and say so. We can talk through the plan with you, coordinate the visit around a family member's schedule, work with a facility's nursing staff and confirm afterwards that the visit happened. With your parent's permission, we will keep you in the loop.

Individual results vary. No treatment guarantees complete or permanent relief, and every plan starts with an examination and a conversation about your goals.
